The factory carpet in a 70 Series does not stand a chance against the mud, sand, gravel, water, and general filth that comes with actually using a Land Cruiser the way it was designed to be used. Once dirt gets ground into the factory carpet it never comes out properly, and water sitting under the carpet leads to rust and mould that you cannot see until it becomes a serious problem. Moulded floor mats sit on top of the factory carpet and catch everything before it gets through, keeping the floor underneath clean and dry. When the mats get filthy you pull them out, hose them off, and put them back in. It is that simple.
