INTAKE UPGRADES FOR THE PRE-V8 ERA

The 1984 to 2007 70 Series ran the 1HZ diesel and 1FZ-FE petrol engines in HZJ75, HZJ78, HZJ79, and FZJ variants. These vehicles came factory with an air intake low behind the grille, exactly where the dust thrown up by every other vehicle on a dirt road ends up. A Safari ARMAX or V-Spec snorkel relocates the intake to roof height where the air is clean, dropping how often the air filter clogs and giving the engine room to breathe under load. On a vehicle that is increasingly being used for serious touring and outback work, this is one of the highest value upgrades you can fit.

SAFARI V-SPEC AND ARMAX, BUILT FOR THE OLD GUARD SHAPES

Each snorkel in this collection is a Safari ARMAX or V-Spec, moulded from UV-stabilised polyethylene that handles stone impacts and Australian UV without cracking. The V-Spec is the cost-effective fixed forward-facing ram head option proven on Australian Cruisers for decades. The ARMAX is the premium high-flow option engineered with CFD-modelled airflow for owners running engine mods or serious touring loads. Both bodies are engineered for the 1HZ and 1FZ-FE airflow rates specifically. Mounting uses existing factory guard holes plus a few additional template-marked cuts. The airbox adaptor seals the snorkel body to the factory air filter housing for an airtight intake. The fitment uses the pre-V8 guard shape, which is different to the 2007 onwards bodies.

The 1HZ 4.2L diesel and 1FZ-FE 4.5L petrol engines are both covered with appropriate intake bore sizing. Each listing confirms exact engine code, body style, and year range before you order. Vehicles built from March 2007 onwards run the VDJ V8 with a different guard shape and need the 2007 to 2023 snorkel range instead. Pair the snorkel with a pre-cleaner for the dustiest touring conditions.
